Champ and Phillips Named PING All-Central Region

EUGENE, Ore. Sophomore Cameron Champ and freshman Chandler Phillips of the Texas A&M men’s golf team were honored this week, garnering spots on the 2016 Division I PING All-Central Region Team.

Champ, a native of Sacramento, Calif., appeared in 11 of Texas A&M’s 13 events this season and ended play as A&M’s top individual in three tournaments while leading the squad with a 72.82 scoring average in 33 rounds of competition. Overall, he notched 12 rounds of par or lower and collected four top-10 finishes.

The second-year Aggie represented Texas A&M at the 2016 NCAA Division-I Championship as an individual after punching his ticket to the event with a tie for seventh in the player standings of the NCAA Albuquerque Regional before besting Army’s Peter Kim in a playoff to advance.

Meanwhile, Phillips, a native of Huntsville, Texas, emerged as one of the SEC’s most competitive golfers during his rookie campaign in Aggieland. He led Texas A&M in both top-five finishes (3) and top-10 showings (5) while ranking second on the squad with a scoring average of 73.05 during 13 events.

During the 2016 SEC Championships, Phillips turned heads with an impressive fifth-place finish that stood out as the second-highest placing of any rookie in the field.

A final round 66 from Phillips during the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate in early March stood out as the second-lowest round by an Aggie this season and helped propel Phillips to a third-place showing at the event. The scorecard was one of 14 rounds of par or lower for the freshman in 39 total rounds.
