Tornado Hits Bryan

Bryan Police officer Jason James explaining where the tornado hit and which areas suffered the most damage.

A local disaster declaration has been sent to state officials for assistance following Thursday’s tornado and flooding in Bryan.

Late Thursday evening, the Brazos Community Emergency Operations Center announced residents of Wheeler Ridge subdivision, which had the most damage, were being allowed to enter the area with proof of residency.

Also late Thursday evening, Bryan school district superintendent Tommy Wallis announced classes were cancelled on Friday. Memorial Day Monday will remain a holiday in Bryan ISD.

Earlier in the evening, Dr. Wallis says students who stayed after classes in every building around the district were taken home or to a location of the parent’s choosing by district employees.

Dr. Wallis was also thankful the tornado did not hit Bowen elementary, located across the street from the touchdown.

Interview below with Tommy Wallis was recorded before the decision was made to cancel Friday classes.

As of 9 p.m. Wednesday, BTU says 665 customers have been restored and 1800 customers are still without power.

BTU group manager David Werley says crews will work throughout the night, both from BTU and other utilities.

Werley says part of the delay is getting to a transmission line that has been not accessible due to flooding.

Bryan deputy fire marshal William Bouse says preliminary damage reports are three homes destroyed and another 50 to 60 damaged.

Sgt. Jason James of the Bryan police department added the biggest problem was sightseers and others driving into high water.

Water rescue teams from Austin and Fort Worth assisted local crews who responded to more than 20 calls of vehicles sinking from high water
