BRYAN, Texas – Senior Andrew Lister claimed a position near the top of the leader board as the Texas A&M men’s golf team finished ninth during the 10th-annual Aggie Invitational at Traditions Club.
Lister (73-72-70=215, -1) carded four birdies Sunday to turn in a final round of two-under and card his third career top-five finish with a fourth-place showing. Meanwhile, Alvaro Ortiz of Arkansas and Kristoffer Ventura of Oklahoma State shared medalist honors at four-under par.
“I’m really happy with the way Lister played,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “That was a really good tournament for him all around. He lost his spot in the lineup, came back to win the qualifier by a big margin and was our best player this week. That was really exciting to see and will help us down the line.”
On the team leaderboard, the Aggies (299-296-293=888, +24) dropped two positions with a five-over par showing during Sunday’s final round. Oklahoma State earned the team title at even par, edging defending national champion LSU by two strokes.
Senior Ben Crancer (76-77-72=225, +9) and sophomore Cameron Champ (74-74-77=225, +9) earned shares of 32nd place in the final individual standings while freshman Chandler Phillips (76-74-77=227, +11) was in 43rd and senior Adria Arnaus (78-76-74=228, +12) was a shot back in 47th.
A trio of Aggies competed in the event as individuals [Connor Black (75-72-77=224, +8), Andrew Paysse(74-75-76=225, +9) and Jake Goodman (78-80-76=234, +18)], with Black finishing in 26th place.
“I feel better about our team than I did at this time last year,” Higgins added. “We are a better team than we were and I’m hoping that this is the anomaly and our one really poor showing. We have played pretty well all spring, we’ve competed against some of the best teams in the country and beat a lot of them. That has allowed us to climb in the rankings quite a bit since the end of the fall.”
Up next for the Aggies is the 2016 SEC Men’s Golf Championship, which will take place at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga., April 15-17.
