Bryan takes down Rudder in battle of school district rivals

By DAVID CAMPBELL

The Bryan Vikings had to multitask.

They fought off a late Rudder comeback, did some successful scoreboard watching and claimed a gold football trophy with back-to-back District 18-5A football championships.

Bryan shared the district title with College Station and A&M Consolidated by taking a 33-19 win over the home team Rangers at Merrill Green Stadium.

“I’m just so pleased,” Bryan coach Ross Rogers said. “We knew their kids were going to give us their best shot and I thought our guys came out and played hard. A lot of crazy things kept happening late in the game and we just couldn’t get in the dressing room.

“I’m pleased for this group of guys that we got a part of that gold ball [championship trophy] again.”

Thanks to Willis’ 38-17 over Huntsville, the Vikings also secured the top Division I playoff spot and will host Manor on Friday at Merrill Green Stadium. Bryan improved to 7-3 with a 6-1 district mark while Rudder’s season ended at 3-7 and 2-4.

Bryan seemed to have the game well in hand when B.J. Ross ran an option to his right and cut sharply back to the left for an open run into the end zone with 6:00 remaining. That gave the Vikings a 31-6 lead, but Rangers’ senior quarterback David Hobson led his team back. Hobson connected on two late touchdowns to keep Rudder within sight. For the game, he hit 17 of 34 passes for 241 yards but was picked off once by Jaquita Thompson.

Hobson hit Brian Williams on a 21-yard slant play for the Rangers’ initial fourth-quarter score. After a fumble, Rudder scored again, with Hobson throwing to Kevin Ford for an 11-yard score. After a series of penalties and officials’ discussions, the clock held at 3:41 for what seemed like an eternity of the fourth quarter before Hobson’s attempted conversion pass was intercepted in the end zone and returned for two points by Gus Hancock to up Bryan’s lead to the final score of 33-19.

Rudder still didn’t back away, with Ladarius Johnson leaping high to snag an onside kick recovery.

“We talked a little bit before we came out about Hernán Cortés, when he came to America,” Rudder coach Will Compton said. “Once they hit the ground, they were going to burn the ships. There was no way out. There was no retreat. There was not giving up. Our kids really bought into that.”

The Vikings locked down the victory with a fourth-down stop when Hobson’ pass sailed high under pressure.

“We couldn’t find a rhythm in the first half,” Compton said. “In the second half, I thought we did a better job of getting in front of the chains and we played pretty good.”

Rudder took a 6-3 lead with a seven-play, 66-yard scoring drive that was capped by David Hobson’s third-down pass to Ladarius Johnson. Hobson’s quick-release pass allowed Johnson to fight into the end zone after Bryan had twice thrown the Rangers for losses.

Hobson set it up by zipping a pass on the right sideline to Vincent Sandle for 30 yards.

Bryan, who was stifled late on its opening drive and settled for an Angel Quiroga field goal, got a break on its second possession. DeMarcus Dates intercepted B.J. Ross’ pass at the one, the Vikings kept the ball because of a roughing the passer penalty.

Hunter Batten played set-up man for Jarvis Lister, who scored on consecutive drives. His nine-yard run was followed by a one-yard Lister step into the end zone.

Lister, who had 22 carries for 149 yards, was part of a 332-yard rushing effort scored his 15th touchdown this season on the next drive, one play after Batten darted up the middle for a 19-yard game to the one.

“That was a good combination,” Rogers said. “Then, we came back on the trap and Hunter got his one.”

Batten had the only touchdown of the third quarter, a 23-yard run. He finished with 12 runs for 83 yards.

The Vikings had a chance to extend their 17-6 halftime lead when punter Tyler Slaydon scrambled for a first down on a 21-yard run, but Quiroga’s field goal try to end the half missed left.
