The Bryan Lady Vikings kept the pedal to the metal.

In a season-opening 70-29 victory over College Station on Tuesday, they had a lot of people mashing it down.

“We can rotate pretty well,” said Bryan coach Beth Jesurun, who had 10 players score. “Defensively, I thought we were pretty aggressive, and offensively I thought we passed it well, so no major complaints.”

Bryan forced 12 turnovers in the second quarter, when the Lady Vikings finally slowed their running game long enough to knock down jump shots.

“After the first quarter or quarter and a half, we finally started knocking down the shots we have been hitting,” Jesurun said. “We were a little bit sloppy at first, missing some easy ones. We’ve got a lot of speed on the court, that’s for sure.”

College Station did not have a field goal in the first half and trailed 39-7 at halftime. When the Lady Cougars escaped pressure from Bryan, they took the ball to the basket. Sophomore guard Raven Manley, who had the speed to compete with the Lady Vikings, had 10 free throw attempts before intermission. She missed her first four tries but connected on four of the final six.

“Right now, we’re playing with some really young kids,” said College Station coach Megan Symank, who has three freshmen and four sophomores on her varsity roster. “Going into halftime, we took a look and we didn’t have any field goals. One of the things we needed was to get good shots. I thought we did a good job on the defensive end, but we didn’t do our job on the block-outs, and they got second, third and fourth opportunities.”

The Lady Vikings took advantage with 20 offensive rebounds.

The Lady Vikings’ first six scores came from six different players. Zasha Taylor got a put-back. Jordan Lopez-Rhodes hit a baseline shot. Kia White sank a free throw. Lorenzia Nowlin made a quickstep move to score and Audrey Malone made a jump stop to score.

Bryan closed the third quarter with a 19-3 run. Lopez-Rhodes hit two baskets and Malone scored twice after steals and knocked down a 3-pointer in the third.

Malone led Bryan with 16 points, and Zasha Taylor had 10.

Freeman scored nine of her team-high 10 points for the Lady Cougars in the fourth quarter.

College Station had a strong fourth quarter. Down 58-14, Katelyn Francis started a 10-0 run with a nice pass for an assist to freshman Raenett Hughes. Sydni Freeman followed that with a pair of 3-pointers, hitting long-range shots from the left wing and then from the right baseline.

Bryan did not score in the period until 3:59 was left, when Alex Sims scored on a fast break.

Overall, Bryan had 32 steals. Sims and Watson led with six steals each.
