KILLEEN, Texas (AP) _ Charges have been filed against three men in an SUV allegedly involved in dragging a police officer through a parking lot before he fatally shot the driver, a Fort Hood soldier.
Killeen police identified the driver as Private First Class Jarvis Galloway. The 20-year-old died in the incident early Saturday morning. He was with the 157th Quartermaster Company, Special Troops Battalion, 15th Sustainment Brigade, 13th Sustainment Command.
Officer James Plank, who freed himself from the sport utility vehicle and fell to the ground after firing his gun, was placed on administrative leave.
Nineteen-year-old Tamarcus Gregory Brown and 23-year-old Mario Lorenzo Jones each were charged with interference with the duties of a public servant. Eighteen-year-old Averwenone Holman was charged with fleeing from a police officer. Holman and Jones also were charged with marijuana possession.
Authorities say the problems started when Holman fled from the Killeen police officer who had gone to investigate a fight in a nightclub parking lot.
Police say that as Plank ran after him, Holman tried to jump through the passenger window of a Chevrolet Trailblazer. Police say Plank tried to stop Holman by grabbing him around his waist as he was partially inside the vehicle, which began driving away as the officer’s arms were pinned.
