25th Texas Plant Protection Conference in Bryan

Last week, there were a record number of attendees at the 25th Texas Plant Protection Association Conference in Bryan.

Speaker and director of Texas A&M Agrilife Research Craig Nessler says their goal is to get information out to farmers to help protect plants from disease and damage, because nature is always changing.

Nessler says the research agents try to stay one or two steps ahead of the pests, and topics included agricultural history and the future, genetically modified crops, and ideas to help reduce the use of pesticides and fungicides being sprayed.

He says they also focused on protecting the environment while producing good crops.

Nessler says it is a great misunderstanding when people fear that farmers use more pesticide than needed, because the simple fact that pesticide is expensive keeps farmers from over-application.

Nessler says  the 100th anniversary of national cooperative extension program is coming up in January.
