Could it be A&M vs Baylor Chapter 4 in the NCAA Women’s Dallas Regional Championship. Well that’s what the selection committee envisioned when last night they put the top two Big 12 teams in the same Region, Baylor as the #1 seed and A&M a #2 seed. In order to meet for a fourth time, both teams would have to win three games but both are favored to do so.
The Aggies are a second seed for a fourth straight year and will start the tournament Sunday at 4 pm taking on McNeese State at Shreveport in the first round. Win that and on Tuesday night they’ll meet either Gary Blair’s former employer Louisiana Tech or Rutgers, who the Aggies beat by 29 at Madison Square Garden in December.
Then it would be on to Dallas to meet Georgia, Middle Tennessee, Florida State or Samford in a regional semi-final. All that before a possible fourth shot at Baylor. Baylor opens their half of the bracket with Prairie View at the Farrell Center, then either Houston or West Virginia. Also in their bracket is Green Bay, Arkansas LR, Michigan State and Northern Illinois.
Baylor has beaten A&M in three close games this year, the most recent last Saturday in the Big 12 Tournament Championship game.
The Big 12 got seven teams in the tournament, including bubble teams Texas and Texas Tech. Iowa State, Kansas State, and Oklahoma also made it. Joining Baylor as a #1 seed are ofcourse top ranked UConn, Stanford and Tennessee
The Aggies are 6-2 against McNeese State in the 37-year history of the program, while Louisiana Tech leads 6-0 in the all-time series and A&M leads 1-0 versus Rutgers. McNeese State is one of six teams to make their first trip to the Big Dance in this year’s tournament field.
