Members of the William Joel Bryan chapter of the Sons of the Republic of Texas want to move a log cabin built and standing near Carlos since 1855 to property in front of Boonville Cemetery, which is owned by Brazos County.
Mervin Peters asked county commissioners this week to take possession of the Turner-Peters House located on land owned but being sold by the Texas Municipal Power Association.
Peters says they also require approval of the Texas Historical Commission. Peters says the Sons of the Republic chapter has been complied with every suggestion made by the state regarding the acquisition and relocation.
Peters says the original site of Boonville, which preceded Bryan as the county seat, is the perfect location for the house.
The home would be located in front of the cemetery, facing Boonville Road. A study by A&M officials found no burial remains were found where the structure would be placed.
Peters says at the time the cabin was built, Brazos and Grimes counties were part of Washington County in the Republic of Texas.
Peters says they have the money to cover the relocation expenses from land that is being sold by the Texas Municipal Power Agency.
This would be the first structure in what Peters called Boonville Heritage Park. He also asked commissioners to replace the “Boonville Cemetery” designation at the gate entrance off Boonville Road to “Town of Boonville”, and add a six flags of Texas display near the cabin.
