12 Year Old Driver Dies in Crash

TRINITY, Texas (AP) _ A Texas boy died in a traffic accident while driving his father’s vehicle and being pursued by officers in a wreck the day after he started sixth grade.

The Department of Public Safety identified the boy as 12-year-old Scott Allen Williford of Trinity, located 80 miles north of Houston.

DPS says Williford died when the pickup left the road and hit a tree Tuesday night. The DPS accident report says Williford, who was not wearing a seat belt, was dead at the scene.

Trooper Chad Seamans says the family had reported that the boy took his father’s vehicle without permission. Seamans says the pickup ran multiple vehicles off the road during the chase that lasted about 15 minutes.

Groveton Junior High principal Todd Moore says counselors were available at school.
