Texas A&M Track & Field Shines at Olympic Trials

EUGENE – Texas A&M track & field all-time greats Jacob Wooten and Fred Kerley punched their tickets to Paris on the third day of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials Sunday at Hayward Field.

Wooten punched the Aggies’ first ticket to the 2024 Olympic Games in the men’s pole vault, following a season-best performance. He was in the thick of a four-way battle for the three Olympic spots, however Wooten delivered his best clearance of the year of 5.87m/19-3 to finish tied for second overall in the event and ensured his spot on the plane to Paris.

Kerley ended the third day of trials with a bang, qualifying to the second Olympic Games of his career. He started his day in the semifinals, advancing second out of his heat to the final with a time of 9.89. Stepping up even further in the evening session, Kerley ran his season-best time of 9.88 for third and a spot on Team USA.

Defending Olympic 800m champion Athing Mu set the bar in the event’s semifinals, as she topped her heat and all competitors with a time of 1:58.84 to advance first overall to Monday’s final.

Two-time Olympic medalist Bryce Deadmon continued his impressive start to trials, securing his spot in the men’s 400m finals after winning his heat and advancing second overall in 44.44.

Timara Chapman and Shaina Burns kickstarted their heptathlon campaigns, as the duo sit in 12th and 16th, respectively, after the opening four events.

Shamier Little wrapped her campaign in the women’s 400m final, as she finished ninth overall with a time of 50.96.

Up Next

The Aggies return to Hayward Field tomorrow for day four of trials where Chapman and Burns compete in the final three events of the heptathlon. Ja’Qualon Scott and Connor Schulman start the evening session in the 110m hurdles, followed by Will Williams in the long jump final, Deadmon in the 400m finals and Mu closes out the day with the 800m final.
