Aggie Expressway Takes Next Step & Public Hearings Scheduled For Widening SH 21 West of Madisonville

The Texas Transportation Commission has taken the next step towards building the Aggie Expressway. Bob Colwell at the TxDOT district office in Bryan says the commission has voted to start the process for selecting a contractor to design and build the toll road between Pinehurst and Navasota. A public hearing will be held this summer to review the environmental study and preferred alignment of the $410 million highway.

TxDOT has also announced two public hearings in Madison County to take comments about the proposed widening of Highway 21 from the Navasota River to Madisonville. Colwell says a funding source has not been identified. The public hearings are May 19th at North Zulch High School from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. and May 21st in Madisonville at Truman Kimbro Convention Center from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m.

TxDOT news release regarding the Aggie Expressway, officially known as State Highway 249:

The Texas Transportation Commission today approved the issuance of a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the development of SH 249 in an effort to improve mobility and connectivity in Grimes and Montgomery counties.

The release of the RFQ signifies the start of the procurement to select a contractor for the design and construction of the project.

The SH 249 extension will improve mobility and safety in Grimes and Montgomery counties, and provide regional connectivity between Navasota and Houston. The addition of this new tolled facility is estimated to cost $410 million. The project, which runs from FM 1774 in Pinehurst to SH 105 east of Navasota, has the support of Harris, Montgomery, Grimes and Brazos counties, as well as numerous cities along the route.

The project also will be constructed in conjunction with additional segments being led by Harris and Montgomery counties.

TxDOT plans to issue a Request for Proposals later this year, and anticipates a proposal due date in spring of 2016. Substantial completion of SH 249 could come as early as winter 2018.
