Bryan City Council Awards A Construction Contract And Starts Condemnation To Acquire Property To Build A New Sewer Lift Station
The Bryan city council approves going to condemnation to acquire easements to build a sewer line and lift station covering areas south and east of the RELLIS campus. That action was taken during a special council meeting on Tuesday (September 17), along with awarding a $5.6 million dollar construction contract. The project is time sensitive, according to city documents, because in order to use federal pandemic grant money there has to be a construction contract by the end of 2024. Before the council’s unanimous votes, one of the property owners affected by the condemnation action tells the council that city staff is “dysfunctional”. Alfred Smith, who said he is in the land business and deals with easements, says he has attempted for four years to reach an agreement with the city. The council or city staff did not respond to Smith saying that the city is not going to take care of controlling sewage odor and that the city plans to remove three oak trees that are 200 years old. Councilmembers had other questions. Councilwoman Marca Ewers-Shurtleff asked public works director Jayson Barfknecht “Has your office made every good faith attempt that they can make to reach some kind of compromise in this case?” Barfknecht told Shurtleff “I think we’ve done a really good effort to try and meet with the property owners and meet with their attorneys to try to reach an agreement.” Click below to hear comments from the September 17, 2024 Bryan city council meeting. Houston Man Going To Prison For A College Station Domestic Violence Aggravated Assault That Happened In 2014
A Houston man is going to prison for a domestic violence aggravated assault that happened in College Station in 2014. The Brazos County district attorney’s office says a plea agreement was reached with 37 year old Anthony Lister to serve eight years on the Brazos County conviction as the result of another domestic violence conviction that took place in Houston. The victim in the College Station attack, who continues to suffer from injuries almost ten years later, submitted what prosecutors said was “a powerful victim impact statement in court to Lister” at his recent sentencing hearing. Court records show Lister pleaded guilty in February 2015 to the College Station attack that took place in October 2014. At that time, he was placed on a suspended ten year prison sentence. A news release from the Brazos County DA’s office said Lister violated probation in January 2023 when he assaulted, strangled, and threatened to shoot another domestic violence victim after he became upset with the result of a football game. News release from the Brazos County district attorney’s office: Anthony Lister has been sentenced to 8 years in prison for violating his felony probation for a domestic violence aggravated assault. While still on probation in January 2023, Lister assaulted, strangled, and threatened to shoot another domestic violence victim. The January 2023 offense, occurred when Lister became upset at the result of a football game. The victim ran out of their home with their child and contacted Houston Police. The Houston domestic violence assault was prosecuted by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. Lister pled guilty in Harris County and was sentenced to 2 years in prison. Because the Houston offense occurred while Lister was still on probation in Brazos County, a motion to revoke his probation was filed. The Brazos County District Attorney’s Office prosecuted the motion to revoke Lister’s probation. Lister faced a potential maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for violating his Brazos County probation. Instead of proceeding to a contested hearing, Lister accepted an agreed sentence of 8 years in prison. The victim of the Brazos County domestic violence assault, who suffered serious injury which continues to affect her today, delivered a powerful victim impact statement in court to Lister at the conclusion of his sentencing. She was also joined and supported in the courtroom by many friends, co-workers, and family members as she delivered her remarks. The District Attorney’s Office would like to thank all members of the College Station Police Department who assisted in the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of Lister as well as all members of the police department who have provided support to the victim in the years since the offense. Statement from assistant Brazos County district attorney Kevin Capps: “Anthony Lister has repeatedly demonstrated that he will inflict violence on those he claims to love. Hopefully, this prison sentence will finally impact his behavior, and stop future violence before it starts.”
