Who’s Meeting With Houston YMCA Leaders in B/CS

The president and three vice presidents of the Houston YMCA visiting Bryan/College Station Friday came at the invitation of a local group courting the Y to open a branch location.

The leader of the steering committee, Karl Mooney, told his colleagues on the College Station city council Thursday night the Y’s next step is deciding whether to spend $25,000 dollars on a feasibility study that could take one year to complete.

Among the questions asked of Mooney was if the Y was expecting the city to contribute towards the cost of land and construction, which Mooney estimated at $18 to $25 million dollars.

When asked if the city would be asked to help pay operational costs, Mooney suggested the Y taking over city programs.

The Y executives are meeting with 20 local officials, representing both cities, both school districts, Texas A&M, Blinn College, the convention and visitor’s bureau, and local business owners.

Mooney says no money from either city or the CVB was spent on Friday’s visit by the Houston YMCA delegation.
