White Says No Wrongdoing in Investment

HOUSTON (AP) _ Democratic candidate for governor Bill White is denying he improperly benefited from an immensely profitable investment in an energy company hired to help with damages from Hurricane Rita five years ago, when White was mayor of Houston.

White’s opponent, incumbent Republican Gov. Rick Perry, has accused White of “profiteering” from the hurricane.

White put $1 million into Houston-based BTEC Turbines, where he once served as a company director. His tax returns, released earlier this week, showed he made more than $500,000 from the investment.

White said Thursday at a Houston news conference it’s a “false story” he benefited personally. He said the investment had been disclosed for several years and blasted Perry for using taxpayer money to “finance his personal lifestyle.”
