White Says He’ll Live in Trailer, If Elected

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Democratic gubernatorial challenger Bill White says he’ll live in a mobile home if elected — as the Governor’s Mansion continues undergoing renovations.

The millionaire businessman and former Houston mayor currently lives in a home appraised at $2.1 million.

It’s another jab at Perry’s rental home outside Austin. The nearly 6,400-square-foot home is costing taxpayers $10,000 a month.

Perry’s spokesman says White’s proposal is a gimmick.

Perry has said the rental house is “as cheap a place as they could find” given the security demands as governor — and he’ll move if lawmakers want him to live someplace else.

Perry initially moved into the temporary home in the fall of 2007, so the governor’s mansion — built in 1856 — could be renovated. Arson damaged the historic mansion a year later.
