EL PASO, Texas (AP) _ A West Texas county official will spend the weekend in jail as he faces federal drug trafficking charges.
A magistrate has ordered El Paso County Commissioner Willie Gandara Jr. held without bond until a detention hearing Tuesday. Gandara appeared in court Thursday, a day after being indicted by a grand jury in El Paso.
Gandara has been charged with conspiracy to possess marijuana with intent to distribute, possession with intent to distribute marijuana and three counts of maintaining property for distribution of marijuana.
Gandara, who was arrested hours after the indictment was returned, faces up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted.
Defense attorney Joe Spencer denies the allegations and says his client has been shocked by the charges.
Gandara is also a candidate for the Texas House.
