Get ready for outgoing mail to take longer for delivery.
The U.S. Postal Service announced Thursday it was closing the Bryan processing facility, a move originally announced in December. The postal service backed off the announcement a few days later following pressure from federal lawmakers, but this time the announcement appears official.
The Bryan facility is one of more than 260 around the country studied for possible consolidation. Of those, 223 will be consolidated, 35 will remain open, and six are on hold for more studies.
Outgoing mail normally processed in Bryan will now go to Austin.
The consolidation means the loss of local jobs for the Bryan employees, although the postal service says many will be offered re-assignments.
The cuts are part of an effort to cut $20 billion in expenses by 2015, and get the postal service out of the red.
