Bryan’s Midtown Park was brought up twice at the May city council meeting.

City manager Kean Register said a month after terminating a design contract for a signature playground, they have another option. The city budgeted $2.5 million dollars and the city received a $2 million dollar foundation grant. Responding to comments from a public speaker on the playground’s status since the city terminated a design contract in April, Register said the city is “satisfied with the extent that our and the developer that donated the money for the project was going to actually build”, “and we found another park builder that also has a relationship with a manufacturer (where) they’re give us probably at least twice as much as what we were looking at.”

And the council without public discussion awarded a $5.6 million dollar contract at the May meeting involving four more components of Midtown Park. According to background information from the city, this contract will:

  • Rehabilitate and increase the height of the Midtown Park lake earthen dam and will remove and replace the dam concrete spillway with a more efficient labyrinth weir dam structure.
  • Build a 12 foot wide shared use path with lighting and cameras and bridge over the dam spillway. This is the final portion of the outer loop trail around Midtown Park.
  • Install a sheet pile wall near the Girl Scouts House where the shared use path is adjacent to Midtown Park’s lake.
  • Remove and replace 1,000 linear feet of Rountree Drive and all associated work. A city document said “This work is critical to containing stormwater in Midtown Lake, and consequently, not bypassing the Lake and running down South College Avenue.”
