Some BTU customers in north Bryan were hit with two power outages this Tuesday morning (June 2).
The first affected 7,000 customers and the second impacted 2,800.
A BTU spokeswoman tells WTAW News that the first outage was caused by an equipment failure at a substation near Kemp-Carver elementary school.
The second outage happened at another substation that was used to help with the first outage.
A new THC ban took effect today here in the State of Texas. Delta-8, Delta-10, THCP, THCA, smokable hemp products, and and raw hemp flower will no longer be available for retail purchase. The items have now been classified as Schedule I drugs. It is now a felony to possess these products, even if you purchased them at a time when it was considered legal to do so. Penalties range from 180 days to two years in prison, and fines of up to $10,000. The Texas State Board of Pharmacy says Schedule I drugs are substances with a “high abuse risk” and “no safe, accepted medical use.” Heroin, LSD, Ecstacy, crack cocaine, Quaaludes…and Marijuana, are all included as schedule I. The Marijuana on this list is for recreational use. The state’s current Compassionate Use laws have not been affected. Delta-9, which is NOT included in the new ban, naturally occurs in cannabis. It will remain the only THC option for Texas consumers, because the federal Farm Bill of 2018 defines hemp as cannabis containing no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC. Consumers should still be able to legally purchase products with 0.3% delta-9 THC such edibles, drinks, lotions, and tinctures.
A man who shot a Bryan Police Officer last year learned his fate on Wednesday. 19-year-old Quincy Leearon McMiller shot BPD Officer Dustin Seelig at the Sandy Creek Apartments on March 01, 2025. Officer Seelig was struck in the arm and officers applied a tourniquet on scene. He was transported to the hospital for treatment and recovered from his injury approximately one month later. Information presented in trial says that McMiller fired at least 20 shots in the direction of the officer, striking vehicles, apartment buildings, and one bullet entering the bedroom of a second floor unit. McMiller was found hiding in a crawl space underneath a structure several blocks away. Officers recovered his firearm and an extended magazine, which he had discarded in a wooded area while on the run. Brazos County Judge David Hilburn handed down a sentence of 20 years for the Aggravated Assault — the maximum allowed. He also imposed maximum sentences of 10 years for two counts of Deadly Conduct, 10 years for Tampering with Evidence, and two years for Theft of a Firearm. Assistant District Attorney Kevin Capps, who presented the case, said “The defendant’s actions were senseless and shockingly dangerous. We are fortunate to have brave and honorable police officers who are willing to serve, and if they are fired upon in the line of duty the offenders should expect justified severe consequences from our community’s justice system in accordance with our law.”
UPDATE 07/30/26 8:30pm: Today Navasota Police attempted to make a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Malibu in the 6900 block of State Highway 6 after an officer observed multiple traffic violations. The driver pulled into the Circle T Truck Stop at 10200 block of State Highway 6, where the officer detected the smell of raw marijuana and observed a small amount of marijuana residue in plain sight. The officer performed a probable cause search of the vehicle and found a suitcase containing multiple packages of marijuana. The combined weight of the marijuana was approximately 25.86 pounds. 34-year-old James Oliver III, of Cypress, Texas, was arrested and charged with Possession of Marijuana, 5 Pounds or More but Less Than 50 Pounds, a third-degree felony. A 34-year-old man named James Lee Oliver III, with addresses in Houston, Katy, and Cypress has been in the Brazos County Jail seven times since 2016 with charges of theft (between $2,500-$30,000), possession of marijuana (4oz-5lbs), and unlawful carrying of a weapon. ORIGINAL STORY: Details are limited, but we received the following images from a WTAW listener on Thursday. You can see officers carrying what looks like a hard-sided suitcase filled with what appear to be bags of drugs. You can later see those same bags stacked on the hood of one of Navasota PD’s vehicles. This appears to have taken place in the parking lot of the Circle T Truck Stop on the Highway 6 Frontage Road at Highway 105 East.
