Two former employees of the Brazos County Tax Office are out of jail following their arrests last week of forging paperwork that allowed people to transfer vehicle titles with paying less or no sales taxes.

Tax Assessor-Collector Kristy Roe says supervisors noticed 36 year old April Arredondo of Bryan was handling more than her share of transactions involving one person gifting their vehicle to another.

According to arrest reports from the Brazos County sheriff’s office, Arredondo admitted to receiving $20 to $50 dollars per transaction to help others.

Arredondo also said she helping a co-worker submit fraudulent paperwork to avoid paying sales taxes on purchasing a SUV. That led to the arrest of 26 year old Sonya Munoz of Bryan.

Roe says Arredondo was fired in February. Munoz resigned in May, according to Roe, before Munoz was identified as a suspect.

Roe says when you’re ready to buy or sell a vehicle with a private party to have paperwork ready to give to her staff.

Statement from Tax Assessor-Collector Kristy Roe regarding the arrest of April Arredondo:

In February, random review of title documents processed in the Brazos County Tax Office indicated a pattern of irregularities that focused around a specific employee.

Monitoring of the employee by supervisory staff identified actions by the employee that seemed to be designed to circumvent statute, policy and procedures.

A close review of several days’ work brought transactions to light that justified deeper research.

The Sheriff’s Office was immediately notified and provided with all information available on the transactions in question.

The Texas State Comptroller’s office and the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles were also notified of the tax office concerns.

The Brazos County Tax Office continues to cooperate fully with the Brazos County Sheriff’s office in their investigation.

The individual in question is no longer employed by the Brazos County Tax Office.
