A Bryan man is hospitalized after being mauled by two pit bulls.

According to an emergency room doctor, the 54 year old man is alive due to actions taken by two Bryan policemen.

Bryan police officer Kelley McKethan says this happened on Old Kurten Road east of the freeway Tuesday about 5 a.m.

A neighbor who reported hearing the victim scream couldn’t get near him because of the dogs.

McKethan says officers Marcelo Maldonado and Steven Laughlin observed the victim lying on the ground with multiple lacerations to his body and face, including an arterial bleed on the man’s arm.

The officers placed a tourniquet to the arm and pressure bandages on other wounds.

The victim was taken to St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

McKethan was told if it was not for the tourniquet, the victim would have died due to the extreme loss of blood.

All patrol vehicles are equipped with medical supplies including a tourniquet. All officers are trained in emergency first aid to sustain patients until medical personnel arrive.

The dogs, which are owned by separate owners, were taken into custody by the Bryan animal center.

McKethan says the owners are cooperating with investigators from the animal center.
