News release from Texas A&M Athletics:
FORT WORTH – Shortstop Ali Camarillo and left-hander Evan Aschenbeck of the Texas A&M baseball team heard their names called on the final day of the 2024 MLB Draft from Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas.
Camarillo landed with the Oakland Athletics in the 12th round with the 346th pick, while Aschenbeck heard his name called by the Chicago Cubs a round later with the 392nd pick.
With the selections, the Aggies had a total of seven student-athletes taken in the 2024 MLB Draft. This marks the second straight season the Maroon & White have had seven players drafted. Texas A&M is the only program in the nation to have three or more players picked in every MLB Draft since 2001.
In his lone season in Aggieland, Camarillo slashed .288/.384/.432 and started all 68 games at shortstop. The junior tallied seven homers and plated 36 runs to go along with a triple, 13 doubles and 50 runs scored. The Aggie shortstop also registered 19 multi-hit performances.
Aschenbeck, the NCBWA Stopper of the Year, was brilliant in 32 relief appearances, racking up a 6-1 record and an SEC-best 10 saves. In 75.2 innings of work, the lefty registered a nation-leading 1.78 ERA and .89 WHIP. Aschenbeck, a unanimous All-American and First Team All-SEC performer in 2024, also totaled 87 strikeouts to only 12 walks and held opponents to a .198 batting average.
Of his 32 appearances, 28 were for multiple innings and 21 were scoreless outings. Throughout his two-year Aggie career, the left-hander went 14-2 with a 2.56 ERA and 13 saves. Aschenbeck’s 13 saves are tied for the seventh-most in school history.
