TEMPLE, Texas (AP) _ Breakfast proved to be the most important meal of the day for the occupants of one Temple hotel room.
A tractor-trailer rig loaded with auto parts veered off Interstate 35 and slammed into their first-floor hotel room Thursday, trapping its driver inside.
Police spokesman Brad Hunt says both of the room’s occupants were breakfasting in the lobby of the Residence Inn and were not injured.
Crews worked more than an hour to extricate the driver, 50-year-old Gustavo Rodriguez, of Eagle Pass. He was transported to Scott & White Memorial Hospital with head, body and leg injuries that were not life-threatening. A woman in a nearby room was also treated for leg lacerations.
Witnesses say the truck crossed two ditches, a frontage road and a parking lot before a retaining wall launched it 15 feet into the air and it smashed into the hotel. The rest of the hotel was evacuated after the crash touched off a brief small fire.
