Top 10 ranking not Turgeon’s focus

When A&M and Texas meet at the Erwin Center tomorrow night, both teams will be ranked No. 10 in the nation… just pick your favorite poll. The ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll that came out yesterday rewarded the Aggies with their first top 10 ranking in more than 3 years and they have Texas ranked right behind at 11th.  Now the AP poll has that reversed with Texas 10th and A&M 11th. Coach Mark Turgeon, as you would expect, doesn’t put a lot of stock in such numbers, not in basketball or at home (turg1).

Mark Turgeon 1-18-11

The Aggies and Horns tip off at 8 pm tomorrow night.

Both polls now have Ohio State ranked No. 1 after Duke’s loss last week and they both have Kansas ranked No. 2. Kansas lived up to that ranking last night when they plowed Baylor in Waco 86-66. Also yesterday on the Big Monday quadruple header, Missouri beat Kansas State 76-69. Also in a battle of top 5 teams, Pitt handed Syracuse its first loss, 74-66.

The Aggie women jumped a spot in the AP poll after West Virginia lost last week. The Aggies are ranked 6th by AP as they get ready to host Texas tomorrow night at Reed Arena and remember that game has a 6:30 tip off instead of 7.
