Thompson lead US Open; Tiger 3 back

Through a long first day of the 112th US Open Golf Championhip, American Michael Thompson’s early four-under par 66 held up as a three-shot lead. No one ever got any closer on day one at the tough Olympic Club Course in San Francisco.

There are five golfers at 1-under par including Tiger Woods, who is looking for his first Major title since winning downstate at Torrey Pines four years ago.

Woods was the clear winner among his marquis threesome as Phil Mickelsen shot 6-over 76 and Masters Champ Bubba Watson shot 78. It was rough on a lot of star players, including No 1 ranked Luke Donald who shot a 79. Defending champ Rory McIlroy shot a 77.

14-year-old Andy Zhang, the youngest player ever to compete at the Open, had a remarkable round. He was 8-over par after the first five holes, but player the remaining 13 in just one-over and pumped his fist when he sunk a 10-foot putt on 18 to break 80.

Thompson  had seven birdies and three bogies to shoot his 66. No other golfer had more than four birdies, but Nick Watney got to his 1-under par round with a double eagle two on the Par 5 17th
