The Hall of Fame basketball coach Jerry Sloan has died. His death was announced by the Utah Jazz, the team he took to the NBA Finals in 1997 and 1998. The Jazz say he died Friday from complications related to Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia. Sloan spent 23 seasons coaching the Jazz, and the team finished below .500 in only one of those years. Sloan won 1,221 games in his career, the fourth-highest total in NBA history. Jerry Sloan was 78 years old.
An expected starter on last year’s Texas A&M men’s basketball team who was dismissed before the season started has been arrested. 23 year old Julius Marble of Cedar Hill (TX) is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in his apartment last October 14th, which was about three weeks before the Aggies first game. The arrest report from College Station police says the victim told Marble “no” to several unwelcomed advances. She also attempted to push Marble away. After the assault, the victim called a friend who took her to a local hospital. The arrest report also says Marble sent a direct message on Instagram the following morning, telling the victim that he did not recall what had happened but he hoped that he did not do anything to upset her. Marble was booked in the Brazos County jail April 18th and is held in lieu of a $50,000 dollar bond.

The College Station ISD school board’s annual review of its School Advisory Health Council (SHAC) focused on student’s use of cell phones. CSISD athletic director Kevin Starnes, who is the administration’s representative on the SHAC, said the council wanted the district to “continue to look at and evaluate cell phone policies to limit distractions/off-task behavior during instructional times”. Starnes said the SHAC made two other recommendations. One was “For CSISD, recommend to have a plan to ensure safety of students arriving/leaving school on bikes”. The other was “that CSISD develop, distribute in the employee handbook, and enforce a policy to limit the screening of paid video advertising presented by any faculty, staff, or substitute member of the district CSISD during school hours or in the classroom.” The conversation also included superintendent Tim Harkrider and several school board members.
