Texas A&M’s Gibson heading to FINA World Championships; Tybur places 12th

INDIANAPOLIS — Texas A&M graduate Sarah Gibson punched her ticket to the FINA World Championships with a runner-up finish in the 100-meter butterfly on Thursday at the Phillips 66 National Championships.

With her runner-up finish, Gibson, from San Antonio, Texas, earned a spot on Team USA and will compete at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary in July. Gibson stood in sixth place at the halfway mark, but the two-time 100 fly conference champion covered the final 50 in 30.53 to edge Louisville junior-to-be Mallory Comerford for the coveted second-place spot by just .01 of a second, 57.96-57.97. Former NCAA Champion Kelsi Worrell touched first in 57.38. In the “C” final of the 100 fly, incoming freshman Taylor Pike (Bentonville, Ark.) placed fourth in 1:00.00.

In other action involving the Aggies, senior-to-be Jorie Caneta placed fifth in the 50 breaststroke in 30.99 and former A&M standout Breeja Larson was eighth in 31.28.

 

INDIANAPOLIS — Texas A&M senior-to-be Jonathan Tybur continued his strong performance at the Phillips 66 National Championships with a 12th place finish in the 50-meter breaststroke on Thursday at the IU Natatorium.

Tybur, from The Woodlands, Texas, touched fourth in the 50 breast “B” final in a time of 28.25 for an overall placing of 12th. On Wednesday, Tybur placed sixth overall in the 200-meter breaststroke.

Incoming freshman Tanner Olson, from Saugus, Calif.,  was the runner-up in the “C” final (18th overall) of the 50 breaststroke with a time of 28.71.
