Texas Sunset Commission Directs DPS To Move Drivers License Operations To The Department Of Motor Vehicles And Recommends Eight Year Licenses

The Texas Sunset Commission has directed the department of public safety (DPS) to move drivers license operations to the department of motor vehicles (TxDMV).

The commission rejected a staff recommendation to close 87 DPS offices and reduce staff at other locations. That would have meant closing Brazos Valley locations in Centerville and Fairfield and reduce staff in Madisonville, Caldwell, and Marlin.

Instead, the commission called on the legislature next year to pay for DPS contracting with an independent third party to perform an analysis and make recommendations of transferring drivers license offices to TxDMV.

If the legislature does not provide the money for the third party analysis, the commission directed DPS to transfer the drivers license operations to TxDMV effective September 1, 2021.

Additionally, the commission also called on extending the term of class C drivers licenses from six to eight years by June 1, 2020.
