HOUSTON HEATH OFFICIALS NOW SAY A JAIL INMATE DIED FROM THE SWINE FLU. AUTHORITIES SAY KENNETH BECKETT WAS COMPLAINING OF FLU LIKE SYMPTOMS WHEN HE WAS TAKEN FROM THE HARRIS COUNTY JAIL TO HOUSTON’S BEN TAUB HOSPITAL. BECKETT DIED THREE DAYS LATER. DOCTORS SAY WHILE HE WAS IN THE HOSPITAL, HE TESTED POSITIVE FOR THE H-1-N-1 VIRUS. THEY ADD BECKETT HAD OTHER MEDICAL CONDITIONS. THE HOUSTON HEALTH DEPARTMENT SAYS BECKETT IS THE ONLY HOUSTON RESIDENT TO DIE OF THE VIRUS.

A MAN ACCUSED OF ABANDONING TWO YOUNG CHILDREN ON THE SIDE OF A RIO GRANDE VALLEY ROAD IS JAILED—FACING CHARGES OF SMUGGLING AND CHILD ENDANGERMENT. AUTHORITIES SAY 26-YEAR-OLD ADAN HERNANDEZ WAS SUPPOSED TO SNEAK THE TWO CHILDREN TO HOUSTON—BUT INSTEAD ABANDONED THEM DURING A TWO-COUNTY CHASE WITH POLICE. THE KIDS—ONE AND THREE FROM SALVADOR—ARE IN C-P-S CUSTODY. HIDALGO COUNTY SHERIFF LUPE TREVINO THINKS THIS COULD LEAD TO MORE ARRESTS.

MANY TEXAS PHARMACIES ARE SOLD OUT OF LIQUID TAMIFLU, AND IN RESPONSE TO THE SHORTAGE, THE GOVERNMENT IS NOW SENDING THOUSANDS OF DOSES THAT MAY BE PAST THE EXPIRATION DATE. IT MAY NOT MAKE A LOT OF SENSE, BUT DALLAS COUNTY MEDICAL DIRECTOR DR. JOHN CARLO SAYS EXPIRATION DATES ON MEDICATION DOESN’T MEAN THE MEDICATION IS BAD. HOWEVER, CARLO SAYS THEY’VE BEEN ASSURED THAT THE EXPIRED BATCH HAS BEEN TESTED AND THE GOVERNMENT SAYS IT WILL WORK.
