Texas Rep Collapses in Capitol Elevator

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Rep. Ed Kuempel of Seguin was found collapsed in an elevator late Tuesday evening as the daily session of the Texas House wound down shortly before 10:30 p.m.

The Capitol staffer who found him said he was unconscious with a faint pulse.

Rep. John Zerwas, a physician and Richmond Republican, joined emergency personnel in the elevator with Kuempel, 66, as lawmakers solemnly gathered to wait for news and pray.

Zerwas said Kuempel was breathing on his own when he was taken out on a stretcher by emergency personnel and taken to Brackenridge Hospital.
