Texas Likely to Lose Federal Education Dollars

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ A bill working its way through Congress would require Gov. Rick Perry to promise to maintain state education spending levels through 2013.

Perry’s office has called the requirement unconstitutional.

A Texas Education Agency spokeswoman and an aide to Republican U.S. Sen. John Cornyn of Texas said Wednesday the Texas-specific measure in the federal legislation would deny more than $800 million to Texas schools.

The provision was part of a $26 billion bill intended to help states ease their severe budget problems.

Cornyn spokesman Kevin McLaughlin said it would be “nearly insurmountable” for Texas to get any money out of the legislation.

A spokeswoman for Perry, who said last month that the provision effectively kills the money for Texas, said the concerns have not changed. The Texas Constitution prohibits the governor from committing future legislative spending.
