Wednesday afternoon update:
The Brazos County Sheriff’s Office is in the process of reconstructing a time line of the activities of a Texas A&M fraternity member who was found dead Tuesday afternoon.
Investigators have determined 20 year old Matthew Hayes of Beaumont attended a formal event in downtown Bryan the evening prior to his death.
After the event Mr. Hayes returned to the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house on Graham Road in College Station.
Hayes was last seen alive in the early morning hours of December 6th.
His fraternity brothers believed that he was asleep, but after missing a function on the afternoon of December 6th, they went to check on Mr. Hayes and found him to be non-responsive in his room.
An autopsy has been completed and we are awaiting the results.
First news release from the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office:
On Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at 5:45 p.m. the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of ‘CPR in progress’ at 3989 North Graham Road, in the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house. Upon arrival at the address Deputies found Matthew Hayes, 10-19-1996, non-responsive and lying on his bed in his bedroom.
Hayes’ fellow fraternity members advised Investigators they thought he had been asleep. They further reported having last seen him at approximately midnight the evening before after returning from a party.
Deputies requested that Justice of the Peace Mike McCleary respond to the scene. Upon arrival, and after conferring with Sheriff’s Office Investigators, Judge McCleary declared Hayes to be deceased and ordered that an autopsy be conducted. The autopsy will be completed by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office on December 7, 2016. Matthew’s parents have been notified of his death.
