Texas A&M’s president fires an English professor the day after he removes a dean and a department head.

Mark Welsh posted a letter on his website that said the personnel actions were the result of the College of Arts and Sciences continuing “to teach content that was inconsistent with the published course description”.

Welsh said “This isn’t about academic freedom; it’s about academic responsibility. Our degree programs and courses go through extensive approval processes, and we must ensure that what we ultimately deliver to students is consistent with what was approved.”

Original story, September 8, 2025:

Texas A&M’s president announces on his Facebook page that the university’s dean of the college of arts and sciences and a department head have been removed from their administrative positions.

Monday night’s statement (September 8) from Mark Welsh said the removals came after he learned of unidentified key leaders in the college approving plans “to continue teaching course content that was not consistent with the course’s published description”.

Welsh also stated “If we allow different course content to be taught from what is advertised, we let our students down.”

The president finished his statement by saying “When it comes to our academic offerings, we must keep our word to our students and to the state of Texas.”

Welsh’s statement did not say what if anything happened to anyone who taught the undisclosed courses resulting the personnel actions against the dean and the department head.

As of Tuesday (September 9) at 8 p.m., Welsh’s Facebook post generated more than 6,000 comments and more than 33,000 likes and loves.
