COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M middle blocker Jazzmin Babers (pronounced BAY-bers) has been named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week for volleyball, the Southeastern Conference announced today. It is the sixth time Babers has received the honor during her career and her first time to garner the accolade this season.
The senior from Syracuse, N.Y., recorded a match-high and personal season-best 10 blocks in a 3-1 victory at LSU, the Aggies’ only match of the week. Babers, who averaged 2.5 blocks per set while leading the Aggies to a 15-4 overall advantage in blocks against the Tigers, also hit .333 with 10 kills to notch her first double-double of the season.
The 10-block performance gave the 2015 AVCA All-American 481 blocks for career, putting her within four blocks of taking over fourth place in the Texas A&M all-time career records for total blocks.
Babers, who has started every match of her career (106), enters this week tied for second in the SEC with 1.42 blocks per set in conference matches only. For the full season, she leads the Aggies with a .331 hitting efficiency, and she is averaging 2.54 kills, 0.94 blocks and 3.05 points per set.
Other SEC honorees are Kentucky’s Leah Edmond, who was named both the player and freshman of the week, and Olivia Dailey, the conference setter of the week, as well as Ole Miss’ Kathryn Cather, who received offensive player of the week honors.
Texas A&M (8-6, 2-1 SEC) heads to Arkansas on Wednesday for a mid-week tilt against the Razorbacks. First serve is at 8 p.m. at Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and the match will be televised by ESPNU with Holly McPeak and Courtney Lyle calling the action. The Aggies close out a three-match road swing Sunday, as they take on Ole Miss at 3 p.m. at The Pavilion in Oxford, Mississippi. The match against the Rebels will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
