Texas A&M’s Eva Paalma Earns SEC Tennis Player of the Week Honors

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M’s Eva Paalma (pronounced A-vuh paul-muh) has been named the SEC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, the Southeastern Conference announced today.

The sophomore from Tallinn, Estonia, played No. 4 singles and went 2-0 at the season-opening ITA Kick-Off event last weekend, posting Texas A&M’s match clinching victory each day as the Aggies went 2-0 and earned a berth at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.

Paalma, playing at the No. 4 line for only the second time her career after having played the majority of her matches at sixth singles throughout her freshman campaign, cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Cinta Maria Papke to close out the Aggies’ 4-0 first-round shutout against No. 73 South Alabama.

In the championship match against 37th-ranked Wichita State, Paalma pulled off a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win against Alexsandra Trifunovic in the last match standing to cap A&M’s 4-3 come-from-behind victory against the Shockers and secure a spot in the indoor championships to be held Feb. 5-8, in Madison, Wisconsin.

Fernanda Contreras of Vanderbilt, which also earned a spot at the national indoor tournament, was named the SEC Freshman of the Week.

Paalma and the Aggies will be back in action later today as they head to Waco to battle former Big 12 Conference foe and 14th-ranked Baylor (3-0). First serve of the top-15 showdown is slated for 5 p.m. at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.
