Texas A&M Women’s Tennis Sweeps SEC Weekly Awards

BIRMINGHAM – The No. 1 Texas A&M Aggies swept the SEC women’s tennis weekly honors for the third time this season with Lucciana Perez and Lexington Reed earning accolades.

Perez, slotted No. 51 in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, claimed her first SEC Player of the Week recognition. Reed garnered SEC Freshman of the Week for the third time.

Perez delivered the winning point in the winner-take-all SEC title match against No. 1 Georgia with a 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(4) victory over No. 42 Aysegul Mert Sunday afternoon. Tied 2-2 in the third set when Mia Kupres tied the match at 3-3, She grinded out the victory with all the eyes in Mitchell Tennis Center and most of the collegiate tennis world fixated on court 4. When Mert’s return of a deep powerful Perez forehand found the net, the Aggies earned the victory over the Bulldogs and a fourth-consecutive league title. Perez added a 6-1, 6-3 victory over South Carolina’s Olympe Lancelot Friday evening. The Lima, Peru, native improved to 21-3 overall and 12-0 in the SEC.

This season, Perez is 21-3 overall with a 17-2 mark in dual action and an undefeated 12-0 record in SEC play. She boasts a 13-match win streak following the victory against Georgia. In doubles play, Perez is 14-4

Reed continued her stellar rookie campaign, scoring the Aggies’ first singles points in both victories over the weekend as the Maroon & White wrapped up the SEC regular season title. She made quick work of both singles opponents, winning by a combined tally of 24-8. Against Georgia, she topped Sofia Rojas 6-3, 6-3. In the win versus No. 21 South Carolina, Reed bested Sofia Rojas, 6-3, 6-3. She also teamed with Nicole Khirin to win two singles matches. They topped No. 90 Mert/Hayden Mulberry of Georgia, 6-2.

The Orlando, Florida, native owns a 25-6 singles record, including 16-4 in dual action and 10-1 in SEC play. Reed boasts a 20-6 doubles mark, including 11-2 in dual action.

The Aggies return to action Friday when they battle Texas, South Carolina or Mississippi State in quarterfinal action of the SEC Tournament hosted by Auburn.
