Texas A&M Women’s Tennis Hosts Georgia for Thursday Showdown

News release from Texas A&M Athletics:

The No. 5 Texas A&M women’s tennis team hosts the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs for the SEC’s premier match Thursday at Mitchell Tennis Center. First serves are slated for 5 p.m.

While Georgia (9-2, 4-1 SEC) owns the top spot in the ITA Rankings, Texas A&M shares the highest perch in the SEC standings. The Aggies are 13-2 overall and 5-0 in league action, owning the conference lead with Auburn.

The match boasts two of the top six players in the ITA Singles Rankings. Texas A&M’s Lucciana Perez enters the fray at No. 5 while Georgia’s Aysegul Mert is slotted No. 6. Perez is 14-0 on the season, including 5-0 in SEC play. She is 4-0 against players in the ITA top 25.

Texas A&M has three more ranked singles players, including Mia Kupres at No. 28, Ilinca Amariei at No. 60 and Violeta Martinez at No. 86.

Georgia has a total of six ranked players. Joining Mert are Anastasiia Gureva (No. 36), Anastasiia Lopata (No. 37), Deniz Dilek (No. 48), Sofia Rojas (No. 61) and Patricija Paukstyte (No. 115).

The squads crossed paths a whopping eight times in the two prior seasons, including meetings at the ITA Indoor Championships, SEC Tournament and the NCAA Championship final both years. In 2024 the Aggies topped Georgia for the NCAA title in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and the Bulldogs returned the favor last year in Waco. In last season’s regular season finale, the Aggies earned a grueling 4-3 victory to claim their fourth consecutive SEC regular season crown.
