Texas A&M Women’s Tennis Falls to Oklahoma

The No. 2 Texas A&M women’s tennis team fell 4-1 to No. 7 Oklahoma Thursday evening at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

Doubles play opened with Oklahoma (22-4, 12-2) striking first to claim the early advantage. The Sooners secured the point with wins on court 3 and 2, as No. 66 Julia Garcia Ruiz/Salakthip Ounmuang defeated Violeta Martinez/Anna Perelman, 6-1, before No. 15 Evialina Laskevich/Edda Mamedova clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory over Daria Smetannikov/Lexington Reed.

The top court matchup between No. 14 Mia Kupres/Lucciana Perez and the nation’s top ranked duo of Roisin Gilheany/Gloriana Nahum went unfinished as A&M (20-4, 12-2) led 5-3.

Singles play began with Oklahoma extending its lead on court 2, where No. 54 Mamedova defeated No. 35 Kupres, 6-2, 6-1. The Aggies answered on court 1 as top-ranked Lucciana Perez took down No. 10 Laskevich in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, to put the Maroon & White on the board. The Sooners regained momentum on court 4 as No. 64 Ruiz defeated No. 103 Reed, 6-4, 6-2.

Oklahoma sealed the match on court 5 as Ounmuang edged No. 84 Smetannikov in a tight first set before closing it out, 7-6(10), 6-3.

Two matches were left unfinished. On court 6, Perelman was tied 6-2, 4-6, 3-3 with Nahum, while Martinez split sets with Chloe Noel, 7-5, 6-7(1).
