Texas A&M Women’s Golf Looks to Go Back-to-Back at SEC Championships

News release from Texas A&M Athletics:

BELLEAIR, Fla. – The reigning SEC champion Texas A&M women’s golf team aims for back-to-back league titles for the second time in program history April 12-16 at the 2024 SEC Championships at the Pelican Golf Club.

The Aggies won last year’s league championship by defeating Florida (4-1), South Carolina (3-2) and Mississippi State (3-2) during match play. In stroke play, they finished third and return four of the starters from last year’s team.

The lineup features Adela Cernousek, Jennie Park, Blanca Fernández García-Poggio and Zoe Slaughter from the 2023 championship squad. Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell is also bringing Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio, the No. 7 ranked amateur in the world, and Sky Sudberry as the alternate.

Cernousek has been leading the team this year with a staggering 70.21 stroke average, which is second in the SEC and on pace to shatter the current program record of 71.24 held by Maddie Szeryk (2016-17). The junior has helped boost the team to four top-three finishes and back-to-back runner-up outings to wrap up the regular season.

Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio and Park are fresh off representing the Maroon & White at the 2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur. Park was an All-SEC Second Team selection last year and earned WGCA and Golfweek All-America second team honors in 2023. Slaughter capped off last year’s SEC championship with the clinching putt versus Mississippi State after a 21-hole match versus her opponent.

Blanca Fernández García-Poggio is the longest tenured Aggie on the roster and has won three individual tournament titles in her career. The fifth-year senior is boasting a 72.29 stroke average this year. Sudberry has made three appearances for the Maroon & White in her freshman season, including a tie for 37th at the Carmel Cup to open the 2023-24 campaign.
