LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – The No. 17 Texas A&M women’s golf team placed third behind a runner-up finish from freshman Vanessa Borovilos who shot 6-under 204 at the Clover Cup on the par-70 Wigwam Resort golf course.
“There was a lot of good stuff to take away from this week,” Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell said. “Middle of the front we were playing really well and then right at the turn we lost our footing. We weren’t very clean through that stretch, but I was happy to see us rally to the finish. We have to be tidier and bounce back from our mistakes quicker moving forward. Vanessa has been so good for us, and this was really her B game. She has continued to get better moving through adversity and looking good at the end of rounds.”
Texas A&M went 1-under 839 thru three rounds and fell to No. 8 Arizona State (-13) and Clemson (-9). This marked the fourth top three finish of the year for the team.
Borovilos fired a 3-under 67 in the final round to tie with Arizona State’s Beth Coulter (-6) and dropping top honors to Melena Barrientos (-8) of Clemson. Borovilos was one of two golfers at the tournament to go below par for all three rounds.
Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio could not quite break through on the front nine with two bogeys and seven pars. However, a string of four straight birdies from No. 12 to 15 vaulted her well withing the top 10. The Madrid, Spain, native shot a 1-under 69 Wednesday and tied for eighth.
Sky Sudberry also went below par on the day, carding a 1-under 69 of her own to secure a share of 20th on the individual leaderboard. Lauren Nguyen was right behind her, tying for 22nd and Kynadie Adams locked up a piece of 24th. Mia Nixon placed solo 30th while competing as an individual.
The Aggies return to the course March 24-25 at the Charles Schwab Invitational in Fort Worth at the Colonial Country Club.
