FAYETTEVILLE – The Texas A&M women’s basketball team was unable to overcome an early deficit, losing Thursday’s game against the Arkansas Razorbacks, 72-51, inside Bud Walton Arena.
Solè Williams paced the Aggies with 13 points on 5-of-8 (62.5%) shooting from the field, including 3-of-5 (60.0%) from long range. Janae Kent added 11 points, five rebounds and three assists. Playing with just eight players, following Sunday’s season-ending injury to leading scorer Aicha Coulibaly, the Aggies managed to hit just 18-of-65 (27.7%) from the field. Texas A&M was also unable to slow down Arkansas on the defensive end as the Razorbacks made 15-of-27 (55.6%) of their field goals in the first half. The Aggies were not able to take advantage of a 14-6 advantage in offensive rebounds, putting up just six second-chance points.
The Aggies found themselves in an early hole as the Razorbacks traded three 3-pointers for layups in building a 13-7 lead at the 4:18 mark. Arkansas inflated the cushion to 10 points before Williams drained a trifecta with five seconds remaining the first quarter to cut the deficit to 21-14 at the break.
After Williams broke the second quarter scoring seal with another howitzer from beyond the arc, Arkansas went on a 17-4 run, staking claim to a 38-21 edge at the 4:20 mark. Texas A&M spent the rest of the period clawing back with Taliyah Parker, Kent and Williams hitting 3-pointers to slash the Razorbacks’ advantage to 46-36 halftime.
The Aggies were unable to draw within a dozen points in the third quarter as foul trouble hit Williams, missing the final 7:51 of the period after picking up her fourth foul. The Razorbacks were ahead 61-45 at the last break with the Maroon & White hitting just 3-of-15 (20.0%) from the field in the quarter.
Texas A&M’s hopes of another fourth quarter comeback were stymied when they went scoreless the first 4:30 of period.
