Texas A&M Volleyball Heads to Austin for Lone Star Showdown

News release from Texas A&M Athletics:

AUSTIN – The Texas A&M volleyball team heads to the Forty Acres for the second meeting of the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown as it takes on the No. 7 Longhorns Wednesday evening in Gregory Gym with first serve set for 7 p.m.

The Aggies are coming off a bounce-back victory over Arkansas (3-1), as they moved above 500 in league play (4-3). A&M dropped the opening frame of the match but rallied to win three straight, including a dominant third set where it only allowed six points, the lowest total in a single frame this season. The Maroon & White stood out offensively, logging 59 kills in the match. The onslaught was led by Logan Lednicky who surpassed 1,000 career kills after registering 18 on the day.

Texas enters the fixture with an unblemished 7-0 record in SEC play, while carrying a nine-match win streak into the match. The Longhorns claimed a 3-1 victory in the first meeting between the teams earlier this year at Reed Arena. Wednesday’s match will be the 97th meeting between the teams and 45th at Texas. The Longhorns boast a 6-1 record in Gregory Gym this season, while A&M is 4-2 on the road.

Through the opening seven matches of conference play, the Aggie defense has been the driving force of the team, as they rank second in opponent hitting percentage (.198), fourth in blocks per set (2.48) and sixth in the digs per set (13.48). The Longhorns have well-rounded production, as they’re No. 1 in the SEC in blocks per set (2.98) and opponent hitting percentage (.165), while ranking second in hitting percentage (.291) and third in both assists per set (12.70) and kills per set (13.78).

Ava Underwood had an outstanding showing versus the Razorbacks, as the junior logged her seventh-straight double-digit dig match with 13 and paired that with a career-high 11 assists to record her first collegiate double-double.

Since the start of conference play, Emily Hellmuth has stood out among the league’s weapons. She has recorded 10+ kills in six of the seven SEC matches and is averaging 3.10 kills per set.
