Texas A&M Volleyball Falls in Five-Set Battle at Oklahoma

News release from Texas A&M Athletics:

The No. 12 Texas A&M volleyball team fell in a five-set battle at Oklahoma Wednesday evening at the McCasland Field House, 3-2 (25-17, 20-25, 25-20, 23-25, 11-15).

The Aggies (10-6, 3-1 SEC) winning streak was snapped at six, as they fell in a slugfest to the Sooners (9-4, 2-2 SEC). Kyndal Stowers led the Maroon & White offensively with 20 kills hitting at .381 percent. Taryn Morris and Megan Fitch also eclipsed double-digit kills, finishing with 11 and 10, respectively.

The opening portion of set one saw a trade of points with neither team creating more than a two-point gap as they found level at eight. Margot Manning broke the deadlock with an ace that led to a 5-2 run and forced a timeout from Oklahoma, 13-10. The Maroon & White’s charge continued behind a steady balance of offense as five Aggies recorded a kill, paced by Fitch and Morris’ three a piece, as they took the opener, 25-17.

In similar fashion to the first frame, the programs remained in lockstep early and were tied at 10. The Sooners strung together a streak, as Head Coach Jamie Morrison huddled up his squad, 19-16. Texas A&M battled to the red zone, but the hosts took the set, 25-20, and knotted the match, 1-1.

The Maroon & White flipped the momentum in the third, racing out to an 11-7 lead which promoted a timeout from Oklahoma. The hosts closed the gap to two as A&M hit the 20-point mark, but late-frame heroics from Kyndal Stowers sealed the set (25-20) as the senior recorded three kills and an ace to retake the match lead, 2-1.

Oklahoma came out as the aggressor in the fourth, forging a five-point lead near the halfway mark, 14-9. Despite a late surge spurred by Manning again at the service line, the Sooners took the set, 25-23, and sent the game to extras, 2-2.

The hosts grabbed the early lead in the deciding frame, 8-4, but an answer from the Aggies courtesy of a 5-1 run had the programs level at nine. The hosts were able to pull away late and sealed the set, 15-11, and match, 3-2.
