Texas A&M Track & Field’s Zaza Nnamdi Claims Javelin Title on Opening Day of SEC Championships

Texas A&M track & field’s Zaza Nnamdi claimed the men’s javelin title on the opening day of the SEC Championships Thursday at the Hutsell-Rosen Track.

Nnamdi highlighted a strong opening day for the Aggies, winning the javelin following a toss of 81.20m/266-5 in the fourth round. The senior entered the meet as the top national seed and showed why he holds that title, as he recorded a pair of throws over the 81m was the only athlete to register four over 78m. His mark of 81.20m/266-5 was over two meters further than second place. Sam Hankins also ensured points for the men’s team, as he took seventh following a season-best throw of 73.99m/242-9.

On the women’s side of the javelin, Katelyn Fairchild captured the first medal of the meet for the Maroon & White after taking third. She recorded a toss of 56.31m/184-9 in the second round that held throughout the contest to ensure her fourth-straight medal at the SEC Championships. Her sister, McKenzie Fairchild, also impressed with a mark of 52.70m/172-10 that landed her seventh.

Michael Moiben rounded out the point scoring on the opening day, as the freshman took sixth in a stacked 10,000m event after crossing the line in 29:47.88. His result added three points to the men’s team total.

Setting the tone for the day on the track was the freshman 800m duo of Peter Narumbe and Stefon Dodoo, who both punched their ticket to Saturday’s final. Narumbe secured his spot first, winning the second heat of the event in 1:48.17, while Dodoo ensured his advancement as the top-timed qualifier after clocking 1:47.25 in heat three.

Continuing the momentum was the women’s 200m group, as all three athletes secured their place in the final. Camryn Dickson set the pace, winning the fourth heat in 22.63 which advanced her second overall. Anya Jackson followed suit, claiming heat five in 23.12, while Jasmine Montgomery ran in a competitive heat six and secured the timed qualifying spot after finishing in 22.87.

Ja’Qualon Scott rounded out the list of aggies that advanced to finals, as he won the second heat of the 400m hurdles in 49.61 to book his ticket to championship Saturday.

The women’s heptathlon started the meet for A&M, as Bradie Menegatti paced the Aggie duo ranking seventh with 3,309 points after the first four events. The freshman’s day was highlighted by a second-place finish in the high jump with a clearance of 1.71m/5-7.25, she also racked up 10th in the shot put (12.23m/40-1.5) and 10th in the 200m (25.43) then rounded it out with 12th in the 100m hurdles (14.43). Mercy Freeman concluded her day-one set in 13th with 3,122 points.

After the opening day of competition, the Aggie men rank third in the team standings with 15 points, while the women hold seventh with eight points.
