Texas A&M Track & Field Shines on Opening day of Raleigh Relays

News release from Texas A&M Athletics:

RALEIGH – Texas A&M’s Cooper Cawthra broke the 1,500m school record on the opening day of the Raleigh Relays Thursday at the Paul H. Derr Track.

The men’s middle-distance group wasted no time rewriting the top of the 1,500m record books, as Cawthra broke the school record with a time of 3:36.79, while Luca Santorum claimed the No. 2 spot in A&M history with a mark of 3:39.58. Santorum was the first out of the pair to race, winning the penultimate heat with his mark (3:39.58) which at the time broke the prior A&M record mark set by Alex Riba (3:40.66). Cawthra took to the track in the final heat right after and snatched the record from Santorum, downing his previous personal best by over five seconds to take fifth overall in the event.

Ondrej Gajdos also recorded an all-time mark in the 1,500m, as he crossed the line in a personal-best time of 3:44.63 which jumped him up a spot in the record book to No. 11.

Continuing the momentum for the men was Victor Kibiego, as the junior ran his season opener in the 3,000m steeplechase and placed sixth overall and fifth among collegiate athletes with a time of 8:39.45.

Closing out the night with another all-time mark was Jack Johnston in the men’s 10,000m. The sophomore ran out of heat two and clocked a time of 28:47.17, which debuts him at No. 2 all-time in A&M history.
