Texas A&M Track & Field Shines in Lubbock

LUBBOCK – Texas A&M’s Luca Santorum and Kennedy Wade etched their names at the top of the Aggie history books, as they recorded school-record performances on the final day of the Corky Classic Saturday at the Sports Performance Center.

The Maroon & White carried their momentum into the final day of the Corky Classic, as they secured two school records, three event wins, 11 top-three finishes, five top-12 marks in Aggie history and four personal bests.

Santorum set the tone for the day, as he won the men’s 1,000m with a school-record time of 2:21.93. His mark downed the previous record which was held by Mike Hummel and stood for 25 years.

One event later, Wade logged her record-breaking performance in the women’s 600y. She ran in the second heat of the event, crossing the line in 1:20.69 which was good for a second-place overall finish. Her time overtook Sandy Wooten’s record of 1:20.88 which was set in 2010.

A&M had another two event winners on the day, the first was Winny Bii in her triple jump debut donning the Maroon & White. She leapt 13.38m/43-10.75 on her sixth and final attempt to ensure her victory, the mark also entered her at the No. 6 spot in the Aggie history books. The women’ 4x400m relay secured the final win of the meet, as the quartet of Camryn Dickson, Jasmine Montgomery, Latasha Smith and Jermaisha Arnold crossed the line in 3:31.34 which ranks No. 3 in the nation this year.

Debora Cherono was another Aggie who made her presence felt in her collegiate debut, as she finished second in the women’s mile with a time of 4:50.75. Her mark entered her in the A&M all-time top-12 performers list at the No. 10 spot.

The final event of the day saw the men’s 4x400m relay group consisting of Cutler Zamzow, Hossam Hatib, Kimar Farquharson and Auhmad Robinson enter their names in the history books at the No. 11 slot, as they crossed the line in 3:03.64 which secured them a third-place result in the event.

A&M recorded another five top-three finishes, as Montgomery placed third in the women’s 200m in 23.25, while Yierra Flemings secured second in the B section of the 200m in 24.15. On the men’s side, Mason Mangum placed third in the B section of the 200m, Diego Heredia finished second in the men’s mile crossing the line in 4:11.62 and Gilbert Rono claimed third in the 3,000m with a time of 8:16.55.
