BIRMINGHAM – The Texas A&M track & field team earned three SEC indoor awards following the conclusion of the season, the league office announced Wednesday.
Head coach Pat Henry was named Men’s Coach of the Year, while Winny Bii and Sofia Yakushina garnered Women’s Newcomer Field Athlete of the Year and Women’s Freshman Field Athlete of the Year, respectively.
Coach Henry led the men’s program to its first SEC Indoor title, as the team won nine medals, including five gold, three silver and one bronze over the three-day meet. His event group sealed the victory, as the 4x400m relay team crossed the line first in 3:03.09 to ensure the championship.
Bii earned her award following her conference title in the women’s triple jump during her first SEC Championships with a leap of 13.79m/45-3. The junior also tacked on another four regular-season wins in the triple jump and set her personal-best in the event of 14.01m/45-11.75 at the Tiger Paw Invitational. She concluded her indoor campaign at the NCAA Championships, earning First Team All-America status for a fourth-place result.
Yakushina made her presence felt in her debut collegiate indoor season, as she claimed the silver medal in the pentathlon at the SEC Championships with a personal-best total of 4,556 points. The freshman also stood out nationwide, claiming a runner-up finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships making her the first freshman since 2014 to finish top two in the pentathlon.
