Texas A&M Softball Takes Series Finale at Texas

News release from Texas A&M Athletics:

The No. 15 Texas A&M softball team claimed the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown series finale, 9-7, Sunday afternoon at No. 1 Texas at McCombs Field.

Texas A&M (24-11, 6-3 SEC) totaled 13 hits and five extra-base hits, using a pair of crooked innings to snap the nation’s longest winning streak. Micaela Wark paced the offense, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, while Kennedy Powell finished 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Ariel Kowalewski and Frankie Vrazel each recorded a double and multiple hits, while KK Dement added a home run.

Kate Munnerlyn (3-3) earned the win, tossing 4.1 innings with two strikeouts while allowing three runs on three hits and four walks. Grace Sparks recorded two groundouts to close the fifth, and Sydney Lessentine worked the final 2.0 innings to secure the win.

Texas A&M jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, highlighted by an RBI double from Kowalewski and a two-run home run by Wark. Texas (31-2, 8-1 SEC) answered in the bottom half, scoring on a double-steal attempt to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Dement led off the second inning with a solo home run to extend the lead to 4-1. Munnerlyn followed with a groundout, a single and back-to-back swinging strikeouts to retire the Longhorns.

After two scoreless innings, the Aggies loaded the bases with two outs on consecutive singles and a walk, but Texas escaped the jam with a flyout. The Longhorns plated two runs in the bottom of the inning to trim the deficit to 4-3 through five.

Ol’ Sarge’s charges responded with a five-run inning, including three runs with two outs, to push the advantage to 9-3. Vrazel ignited the rally with a double, and Powell followed with an RBI double. Kowalewski added an RBI single before the Aggies capitalized on defensive miscues. Tallen Edwards reached on a fielding error to score a run and Dement reached on a throwing error to bring home two more.

Texas A&M held off a late push as Texas plated four runs on three hits, including back-to-back two-out home runs. Lessentine induced a foul popout to end the game and secure the 9-7 victory.
