Behind a three-hit night from Mya Perez, No. 16 Texas A&M opened SEC play with a 7-2 win over No. 17 LSU Saturday night at Tiger Park.

Mya Perez led the Aggies, going 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and three RBI, while Kennedy Powell paced the offense matching a season-high three runs scored. KK Dement added a solo jack.

Sydney Lessentine (8-1) earned the win, tossing 4.0 innings with two strikeouts while allowing one run on two hits and one walk. Kate Munnerlyn pitched 2.2 innings in relief with one strikeout while yielding one run on two hits and two walks. Sidne Peters earned her first save of the season, striking out the final batter.

Texas A&M (18-8, 1-0 SEC) struck first in the opening stanza after Powell led off with a walk and advanced to third when Perez singled up the middle. Powell later crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Dement.

The Aggies added another run in the third after Kelsey Mathis singled through the left side following consecutive walks, scoring pinch runner Annsley Groce.

A&M capitalized in the fourth after an LSU fielding error and a passed ball put runners on the corners with one out. Tallen Edwards followed with a sacrifice fly before Perez delivered an RBI double to extend the lead to 4-0.

LSU (18-8, 0-4 SEC) mustered its first hit in the bottom half when a dribbler bounced off the third base bag. An RBI single to center later cut the Aggie lead to three, 4-1.

Ol’ Sarge’s charges answered in the fifth as Dement blasted a solo jack. Perez capped her three-hit night with a two-run moonshot in the sixth to push the advantage to 7-1.

Munnerlyn entered the circle in the fifth and retired eight straight Tigers before a pair of singles and a pair of walks allowed LSU to cut the lead to 7-2 with two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh. Peters then entered and slammed the door shut with a called strikeout.
